One water company kept detailed records on all repair and maintenance work orders and costs for its 53 pump stations, both submersible and S&L Surface Mounted. A 12-year study of the data revealed nearly 56 percent lower operating expenses for the S&L stations compared to submersibles — a differential of nearly 30 labour hours and £2,000 per station per year!

The Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kan. (USA) kept detailed records of all repair and maintenance work orders for the 32 S&L Surface Mounted Pump Stations and 21 submersible pump stations in its sewerage network for 12 years. It included all labour hours and costs, outside contractor expenses, parts costs and total expenditures for these stations.

Pump Station Maintenance & Repair Expenses

The results overwhelmingly favor the S&L Surface Mounted Pump Station approach with nearly 56% in total cost savings, an average of more than £2,000 per pump station per year (nearly $400,000 saved by the city over a 12-year period).

Preventative Maintenance Hours

The average number of hours spent on preventative maintenance for submersbile stations more than doubled that of S&L’s surface mounted stations – 23 hours per station per year for submersibles to just 11 hours per station per year for S&L stations.

Corrective Maintenance Hours

Likewise, the average number of corrective hours favored S&L Surface Mounted stations, 36 to 48 hours per station per year for submersibles.
